Pokhara Local Events

There are numerous festivals, cultural celebrations, and events in Pokhara throughout the year that you can enjoy. Religious rituals are a part of daily life in Nepal and so it often feels like there is always something happening. Check below for the latest Pokhara events, festivals and news so you can plan your Pokhara holiday accordingly.

Bandipur Dashain

Place: Lamjung, Kaski and Tanahu Districts (6 Oct 2010)
Bandipur Dashain is actually a 3 nights/4 days program organized as part of the promotional campaign by Annapurna Village Tourism Development Committee (AVTDC) for Nepal Tourism Year 2011.

Deepawali (Tihar)

Place: All over Nepal (3 Nov 2010 - 7 Nov 2010)
Just a fortnight after conclusion of Bada Dashain, the festivities of Deepawali (or Tihar) fill the air once again throughout Nepal. Do not miss the spectacular displays of traditional oil-lamps, candles and electrical lamps prepared especially to mark the cheerful celebrations of this festival in the Lakeside area as well as other places in Pokhara.

Bandipur Tihar

Place: Lamjung, Kaski and Tanahu Districts (4 Nov 2010)
Bandipur Tihar is yet another event (4 nights/5 days program) organized by Annapurna Village Tourism Development Committee (AVTDC) in order to promote Lamjung, Kaski and Tanahu Districts as tourism destinations.

This year, it is scheduled to start on November 4 and again on November 28.

Shivaratri

Place: Gupteshwor Mahadev Temple and all over Pokhara (3 Mar 2011)

Shivaratri in Sanskrit stands for 'the Night of Lord Shiva' and one of the most sacred occasions for Lord Shiva's devotees. Hindu mythology describes Shiva as the god of all gods.

This festival is celebrated by Hindus all over Nepal and abroad at all the temples of Shiva.

Ram Nawami

Place: Temples of Lord Ram (12 Apr 2011)
Ram Nawami is celebrated by Hindus all over Nepal as a commemoration of the victory of Ram (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu) in the fierce battle with the mighty army of Lanka (then ruled by Rawan), between Rawan.

Ropain Festival

Place: Lakeside (29 Jun 2011)

Ropain Festival, also known as Asar 15, is celebrated mostly by farmers of the Terai and Inner-Terai regions of Nepal to mark the day they plant new seedlings of rice crop of the year in their paddies. In Pokhara they also invite tourists to join the celebrations of the day. Ropain in Nepali means rice plantation.

Haritalika (Teej)

Haritalika is a Hindu festival, celebrated exclusively by Nepalese women (of Brahmin and Chhetri ethnicities). Most people call it by its popular name, Teej. Women essentially dressed in bright red are seen flocking in the streets, on their way to nearby temples of Lord Shiva.
